Arnold Bennett

Born in 1867 in Hanley, Bennett left the Potteries when he was 21. London and Paris nurtured him, but his roots lay in the smoky air and cobbled streets of the pottery towns he immortalised and which provided the background for his formative years.

It is because Bennett can – by using observation, irony, humour and compassion – create a bond of fellow-feeling between his readers and his creations that he has survived. Arnold Bennett, celebrating the life of the townsman, and Thomas Hardy that of the countryman, achieve universality in a regional setting.
